PhD student wins Royal Society of Chemistry prize

25 February 2015

Two men shaking hands and holding a certificate.
President of the RSC Organic Chemistry section Prof. Dr. Ray C. F. Jones presented Richard with his prize.

Richard Edwards, a PhD student at the School of Chemistry, has won a poster award for his poster [18F]F-DOPA Synthesis with Hypervalent Iodine Compounds.

Richard received his prize at the RSC Organic Division South-West Regional Meeting. Richard investigated the synthesis of a novel class of hypervalent diaryliodonium precursors for the synthesis of F-DOPA, a PET-tracer molecule very useful for the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. First parts of his synthesis have just been published in Eur. J. Org. Chem.

Speaking about the opportunity and of his win, Richard said: "The RSC organic division south-west regional meeting is an event we go to every year. Such conferences offer a great opportunity to see a lot of new and interesting chemistry."

"I was very pleased to be accepted to present a poster at the event. Communicating research to peers in the scientific community is a very important part of chemistry and winning the poster prize will hopefully give me more opportunities for communicating my research at other conferences and events."

Congratulations Richard!
