Cardiff University business partner IQE has won two top prizes at the first annual Cardiff Business Awards

The St Mellons-based company, which is partnering Cardiff University in a new joint venture to develop the next generation compound semiconductors, was voted Business of the Year and International Business of the Year.

Cardiff University sponsored the Technology and Innovation Award at the gala event. Professor Karen Holford, Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Physical Sciences presented the award to Genesis Biosciences, a global company that develops safe and natural microbial and antimicrobial products.

Held at Cardiff City Hall, the Cardiff Business Awards featured 12 winners. Chief executive of FTSE 100 company Admiral, Henry Engelhardt, received a special judges award for his contribution to the economy of the capital.

A range of local organisations including Cardiff University backed the inaugural Awards, set up to celebrate the successes of entrepreneurs based in the capital. A total of 48 finalists from a wide range of sectors were shortlisted across 14 categories including tourism and leisure business of the year, young businessperson of the year and retail business of the year.
