Academics from Cardiff University’s Institute for Compound Semiconductors have delivered their first week of short courses for Newport Wafer Fab Ltd.

Newport Wafer Fab excels in the fabrication of silicon wafers (a semiconductor) and is also a development centre for compound semiconductors and photonics production. The organisation commissioned Cardiff University to create a bespoke training course to provide employees with an overview of compound semiconductor electronics and photonics, so that they have an increased understanding of how these technologies could be integrated successfully with the organisation’s existing procedures.

The Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS) is a partnership between Cardiff University and IQE plc and is a unique facility in the UK. Its aim is to create a global hub for compound semiconductor technology research, development and innovation. Cardiff University provides the research element and IQE plc provides the link to commercial development.

The first short course that has been developed for Newport Wafer Fab is in compound semiconductor electronics and photonics and is jointly delivered by the Schools of Engineering and Physics. The course is delivered by Khaled Elgaid and Daryl Beggs.

As well as employees from Newport Wafer Fab, colleagues from Catapult and SPTS Technologies also attended some of the courses, and feedback has been extremely positive!

"Thank you for a fantastic delivery today.  Those who attended have advised this was one of the best technical courses they have been on.  The pitch and pace is good and the delivery is relaxed.  From a business point of view it meets my objective – delegates can now all explain compound, epitaxy and the benefits of compound GaN and photonics – refraction index, gates and wave guides etc."

The training programme that Cardiff University and The Institute for Compound Semiconductors have developed for Newport Wafer Fab is bespoke and specifically meets their detailed requirements.
