A research group led by Professor Michael ODonovan from the School Of Medicine has revealed common genetic variations, held by large numbers of people, but which offer a much smaller contribution to their risk of schizophrenia. Professor ODonovan said that while the research could lead to a better understanding and better treatment for schizophrenia, it is still far from a complete picture. The Guardian, Times Higher Education Law enforcers need to taste the benefit of surgical spirit On the basis that prevention is better than a cure, the Director of Cardiff University's Violence Research Group, Jonathan Shepherd has called for a new research-led approach that made medicine the profession it is today to be replicated in the criminal justice system. Speaking after he picked up a prestigious award for his work in the field, Professor Shepherd said research on crime and justice was languishing "in the Victorian age" and required the creation of a new academic discipline to overhaul it. Cardiff scientists develop new understanding of common blood cancer Further steps have been taken into the exploration of better treatments for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, the most common form of leukaemia in the Western World. A team of scientists from the School of Medicine has identified a key protein in the blood that prevents chemotherapy killing leukaemia cells. Dr David Grant, Scientific Director of Leukaemia Research, which has invested than 700,000 invested in research into blood cancers in Cardiff University, said: Cardiff University is one of the leading centres for research into this form of leukaemia. The Farmers Union of Wales and the Universitys eCommerce Innovation Centre are the Welsh partners in the Rural-eGov project, which is working towards improving the level of electronic administration services available to the public in rural areas. The lack of effective broadband in many parts of Wales means that many farmers cannot use eGovernment services, such as cattle movement and vehicle registration and paying income tax and VAT online. Farmers Guardian, Farmers Union of Wales, e-Government News, Western Daily Press, Carmarthen Journal Designing streets to help drunks home A team of scientists from Cardiff University has created a model that mimics the movements of drunken crowds to help find ways to design streets to direct people safely home rather than into the path of potential conflict. Dr Simon Moore of the School of Dentistry presented the findings at the International Crime Scene Science Conference in London. The key finding is that drunks become irritants because they slow peoples progress towards their goal, making them possible targets of violence. New evidence published in the Astrophysics and Space Science suggests that the clouds of Venus could support microbial life, which could be transported to Earth. Authors Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe and Dr. Janaki Wickramasinghe of the HYPERLINK "http://www.astrobiology.cf.ac.uk/" Cardiff Centre of Astrobiology, said: Venus and Earth have often been referred to as sisters because of their geological similarities. Our research proposes that the two sisters may be biologically interconnected as well.
