BBC Radio 4 Roadshow at Cardiff University

BBC Radio 4 will be visiting Cardiff University on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th November 2009 as part of its first-ever autumn tour. Cardiff is one of three universities chosen to take part in the tour which features a variety of live recordings open to staff and students, as well as a range of student workshops. All tickets for the recordings are free, and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Please note that the recording of the News Quiz on Thursday 12th November has regretfully been cancelled due to illness. The rest of the BBC Radio 4 Tour at the University is going ahead as planned.
Bespoken Word
There is a treat in store as some of the UK’s finest spoken worders and performance poets take to the mic. Bespoken Word was the UK’s first programme dedicated to today’s performance poetry scene, and has broken new talent ever since.
The star guest for this special Cardiff University recoding will be Laura Dockrill. One of the hottest new talents on the spoken word scene, Laura regularly gigs with Kate Nash.

BBC College of Journalism Workshop
Thursday 12th November 9-11am (Committee Room 2, Glamorgan Building) and Friday 13th November 10am-12pm (Council Chamber, Glamorgan Building)
The College of Journalism is at the forefront of BBC journalism learning and uses some of the finest reporters, correspondents and editors to pass on their knowledge. The session will cover the ethical and editorial challenges BBC journalists face every day, assess the importance of BBC values and analyse what the future holds.
Features Workshop with Toby Amies
Thursday 12th November 12-2pm (Committee Room 2, Glamorgan Building)
Toby Amies is an accomplished broadcaster, filmmaker, writer, photographer, professional bohemian and gentleman adventurer. In this workshop he details how he sets about making his programmes.
Torchwood Workshop
Thursday 12th November 2-4pm (Committee Room 2, Glamorgan Building)
This workshop will explore how to translate a highly successful, and very visual television series into radio. The producer will give a behind-the-scenes look at how Russell T Davies’ creation made its way onto the airwaves – and reveal how a visual series works when you can’t see the pictures.
BBC Science Workshop
Thursday 12th November 4-6pm (Committee Room 2, Glamorgan Building)
Science isn’t always easy to explain to the general public. The production team behind Material World gives a masterclass into how to persuade scientists to leave their equations and technical language in the lab and put across the excitement of science to a lay audience.
Mr Gee’s Performance Poetry Workshop
Friday 13th November 3-5pm (Council Chamber, Glamorgan Building)
Any Questions?
Topical discussion show in which a panel of personalities from the worlds of politics, media and elsewhere are posed questions by the audience. The discussion is chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby and the show is broadcast from a different location each week.

The News Quiz
Unfortunately due to illness, Sandi Toksvig is unable to travel to Cardiff and will not be able to chair The News Quiz at Cardiff University Student Union so this show has, regretfully, been cancelled.
Sandi and the News Quiz team are terribly disappointed and apologise to those who were looking forward to watching the recording. The rest of the BBC Radio 4 Tour at Cardiff University is going ahead as planned.

The 3rd Degree
Hosted by Steve Punt from BBC Radio 4’s comedy The Now Show, The 3rd Degree is a pilot for a new quiz show pitting undergraduates against University staff in a general knowledge/specialist subject quiz. Come and witness our students and academics put their wits against each other.

The Material World
The Material World is Radio 4’s weekly half hour look at science in and behind the news. Presenter Quentin Cooper and guests explore the latest scientific discoveries and discuss current issues where scientific evidence has a crucial part to play.
