Do you have a research story that may be newsworthy?
If so, the Public Relations team has an allocated Public Relations Officer for each Academic School who will be able to advise on the best ways to communicate your research. This may range from a media release, to producing a web item, film or article for Cardiff News.
Please contact the allocated Public Relations Officer for your School with as much information as possible by answering the questions in the research news leads questionnaire . We can then determine which publicity opportunities are most appropriate to raise awareness of your research and its likely impact.
James Randerson, The Guardian’s Science Correspondent, visited the School of Biosciences recently to deliver a seminar on ‘Science and the media: How to get what you want’.
The talk deals with understanding the journalistic outlook, the seismic changes happening in the media, and also offers practical tips about how scientists can present their work and expertise in interviews.

The University’s Public Relations team works closely with the Science Media Centre to provide expert comment and deliver training opportunities for researchers.
The Science Media Centre is an independent venture working to promote the voices, stories and views of the scientific community to the national news media when science is in the headlines.
Their ultimate goal is to facilitate more scientists to engage with the media, in the hope that the public will have improved access to accurate, evidence-based scientific information about the stories of the day.
The Science Media Centre has produced a factsheet for scientists providing top tips for media work, and kindly allowed us to make it accessible to scientists at Cardiff University.

The University's Community Engagement Team (CET) plan and host an array of events throughout the year to provide a platform for our academics to increase public awareness of their research and knowledge. This could be in the form of special lectures, festivals, Science Cafes, workshops, debates and collaborative research projects.
CET provide advice and resources for planning and managing public engagement events on their web pages. From the intial planning stages, to working out a budget, through to publicising an event:
The Public Relations Office support CET in promoting and publicising their community engagement events, using a variety of the most suitable communication channels.
As part of the University's ongoing commitment to sustainability, the Public Relations Team devised a guide to planning an event at the university in the most sustainable way.
The guide is for Cardiff University staff who are involved in planning an in-house event or marketing an event. It will also be useful for those involved in organising University-related events outside of the University itself.
It provides initial ideas and steps to help you improve the sustainability of your event. The aim is to encourage principles of sustainability and help you to reduce the impact of your event on the environment.
