17 September 2008

International tenor and Grammy award-winner headline Cardiff University’s 125th anniversary concert.

Luminaries from the worlds of opera, music, and media are coming together to mark Cardiff University’s 125th anniversary year with a gala concert at one of Wales’ leading venues.

Internationally-renowned Welsh tenor Dennis O’Neill CBE will be joined by Grammy Award winning soprano Rebecca Evans for the concert, to be held at the Wales Millennium Centre on Sunday October 19 2008.

Together they will perform some of the world’s best-loved opera songs and classical music, accompanied by the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera.

Born in Wales, Dennis O’Neill has led a distinguished career, and has made principal appearances in opera houses around the world. Rebecca Evans has established a global reputation for her work, singing alongside operatic greats such as Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti.

Also performing at the concert will be the Chamber Choir from the University’s own highly-regarded School of Music, as well as students from the acclaimed Cardiff International Academy of Voice, of which Dennis O’Neill is Director.

The gala concert will be hosted by Cardiff Alumnus and BAFTA Award winning journalist Huw Edwards, who said: "I was in one of the lucky years of Cardiff students who celebrated the University's centenary, and I'm really proud to be asked to host this gala concert a quarter-century later. The line-up is terrific and the event will underline the prestige that Cardiff now has as one of Europe's leading universities."
