Alcohol: the good the bad and the ugly!

23 November 2008

As Wales’ binge drinking culture continues to hit the headlines, Cardiff University next month hosts one of Britain’s leading authorities on alcohol misuse.

Professor Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians will be visiting the University on Thursday 4 December 2008 to deliver a lecture - Alcohol: the good the bad and the ugly!

Professor Gilmore is Chairman of the Alcohol Health Alliance, the ground-breaking coalition of 24 organisations set up in 2007, whose mission is to reduce the damage caused to health by alcohol misuse. His lecture will highlight alcoholic liver disease and other effects of alcohol misuse and investigate the real impact of alcohol on people’s health.

The lecture is part of Cardiff University’s highly successful Science in Health Lecture series. Introduced six years ago they enable the public to hear about areas of concern in healthcare and the very latest in new research into public health. Topics in the series, run by the University’s Community Engagement Team have included diabetes, leukaemia, Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer.

Attendance at the lecture is free of charge, all are welcome, including senior school pupils interested in a possible career in healthcare, and no booking is necessary.

Professor Gilmore's lecture begins at 7.30pm in the Large Chemistry Lecture Theatre with refreshments available from 7pm in the Viriamu Jones Gallery. Both venues are in Cardiff University’s Main Building, Park Place, Cardiff.
