Professor Colin Riordan takes up the post of Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University on 1 September 2012. The Education Minister and Director General of the Russell Group are amongst those who have welcomed news of the appointment.

Welsh Assembly Government Education Minister Leighton Andrews, AM said:
"I would like to extend a welcome to Professor Riordan who will return to Wales after a successful career leading Essex University and playing a significant part in national developments in England. I have no doubt that Professor Riordan will make a significant contribution to the growth and development of the sector in this important time of change.
"In particular, Professor Riordan's experience in pioneering new forms of partnership such as the innovative University Campus Suffolk which opened up opportunities for new learners and his involvement as an advisor to the Independent Review of Higher Education Governance in Wales will prove of considerable worth both to the future development of Cardiff University and the Welsh sector as a whole."

Bill Savage, Chairman of Cardiff & Co, welcomed the appointment of Professor Colin Riordan as Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University from September 2012. He said: "Professor Riordan will bring with him an excellent reputation and a strong international record.
"The retiring Vice Chancellor, Dr David Grant, is an outstanding leader for Cardiff University and at Cardiff & Co we have been privileged to share his wisdom and judgement as a member of the board of directors.
"I know the board will join me in saying that we look forward to meeting Professor Riordan as he prepares to take up his new post and hope that we may be able to work with him to continue to promote the capital of Wales and its university both nationally and internationally."
