Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant has joined staff and students from across the University in making a Sustainability Week Pledge.
Dr Grant is among the first to make a pledge, supporting the University-wide sustainability agenda by promising a new award - the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize for Sustainability.
Dr Grant said: "The University wholly supports Sustainability Week and the activities and events taking place this year, which is why I have pledged to award a Prize for Sustainability during the annual Sustainability Week.
"Sustainable development is an agenda we are wholly committed to as a University and consequently I am keen to see Sustainability Week grow year after year. I hope this Prize will encourage even more people to support the University in becoming more sustainable. I will be watching with interest what pledges and ideas will come to be posted to the website throughout the week to help the University become more sustainable."
The Vice-Chancellor’s Prize will be awarded to those members of the University who demonstrate the best improvement in sustainability practice. It will be awarded for the first time during Sustainability Week 2010 and become an annual Prize.
Sustainability Week has also being used as a platform to launch a special Cardiff University Innovation Network Sustainability Award. This is the first time Cardiff University Innovation Network will include a Sustainability Award in its annual award ceremony which takes place in Spring 2010. This new Award will provide an opportunity to recognise the outstanding work being done, through collaboration between business and Cardiff University, in the field of sustainability in Wales.
Staff and students still have time to post a Sustainability Week Pledge by logging onto the Sustainability Week web pages.
There are a number of other ways to get involved with Sustainability Week including Your Sustainable Idea initiative and the Detox Box. There is also the chance to go online and test your knowledge of sustainability-related issues; read about what other members of staff are doing across the University to support the sustainable development agenda; and attend one of the events taking place throughout the week.
