The School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education has joined forces with the Welsh Assembly Government and Rhondda Cynon Taff Teaching Local Health Board to fund and set up a Dental Teaching Unit in Porth.
The new dental education facility will provide patients with comprehensive care in all aspects of NHS dentistry, using some of the most advanced technology available.
Opened by the First Minster for Wales, Rhodri Morgan, the Dental Teaching Unit is a newly refurbished building, and is the first of its kind in Wales. It will be home to 10 recently qualified dentists, working in eight fully equipped dental surgeries while completing a two-year Dental Foundation Training Scheme. Patients will be treated by Foundation Dentists based at the multi-purpose unit, under the guidance of experienced dental surgeons.
The Dental Postgraduate Section within the School is funded to deliver Continual Professional Development courses for dentists and dental care professionals throughout Wales. It has been instrumental in bringing these ambitious plans for dentistry in Wales to fruition. The Unit will be supported by qualified dental nurses, trainee dental nurses, receptionists and central decontamination sterilising assistants.
First Minister Rhodri Morgan said: "This Dental Training Unit will be the first of its kind in Wales and it will make a significant difference to the quality of our dentistry. Not only will it provide invaluable training for our future and current dentists it will improve access to dentistry in the area, so that every patient will have access to a dentist. This is a real red letter day for dental patients and trainee dentists in Wales."
Alan Griffiths, Dental Programme Director said: "This Unit will provide our newly qualified dentists with an invaluable opportunity to begin their careers in dentistry. This is the start of a promising career pathway in an environment where they can gain practical experience and benefit from high-tech operating and learning tools."
