27 February 2008
Student Volunteering Cardiff is celebrating Student Volunteering Week with an action packed schedule of events and projects.
Running from the 25 February to the 2 of March, Student Volunteering Week is a nationwide event aimed at raising awareness of student volunteering and to celebrate the work that students do in their community.
Student Volunteering Cardiff (SVC) has already taken part in a fun run to start the week, and other events include a clothing collection, a night of live music and activities at a local school.
Andrea Dare, the manager of SVC said: "Student Volunteers are an important resource to many areas of the community - helping parents, schools and individuals. This week is a great opportunity to celebrate what they do. The money raised will be vital to enable the students to continue making a positive impact to the environment they are part of."
SVC is a student run charity that co-ordinates over 35 different projects with 900 student volunteers, all contributing to the local community. Sam Smith, chair of Student Volunteering Cardiff was recognised as an exceptional ‘Young Leader’ at the Leading Wales Awards 2008. The organisation has been running for 40 years and recently became the first student volunteering organisation to be presented with the ‘Investing In Volunteers’ award.
The charity contributes an estimated £900,000 to the local economy each year through a variety of projects which include befriending schemes with older people, children, teenagers, adults with learning disabilities and mental health patients. Students also work within the community with homeless adults and children with physical disabilities.
SVC has various educational projects for children, which involve volunteers assisting in classrooms, helping develop numeracy and literacy skills, teaching about science and using sensory equipment for children with learning disabilities.
