A business idea sparked by enterprising Cardiff students for a child friendly animated news show has been shortlisted in the Santander Universities Enterprise Awards.
Incepto Media was formed by three undergraduate students and hopes to deliver 2D animated news stories for children aged 4-10 that will be available on a mobile app and on their website.
The students behind the idea are Memet Edikci and Ashley Copp from Cardiff Business School and George Webb from the School of Mathematics.
"The aim of the show is to both educate and entertain children through recycling and repackaging the content and language of news so it is suitable for children," Memet Edikci said.
"By using animation, we hope children will become more engaged with the news through using cool and funny characters. We hope to make news both educational and entertaining and provide something that parents are happy for their children to watch."
The idea was born out of an entrepreneurial competition run by Cardiff University Enterprise to help business start-up ideas and development. The group have since received mentoring and support to develop a business plan and a draft version of their concept.
Enterprise Officer, Iheanyi Ibe, said: "Cardiff University Enterprise provides a support platform for our students to launch small businesses and develop latent ideas. The group have demonstrated determination in developing their idea and we are excited they are getting acknowledged by being through to the final of this national award."
The awards, now in their fourth year, are funded by the Santander Universities Global Division and aim to support and encourage university students to pursue their business ideas.
The 10 entrepreneurial projects (five undergraduate and five postgraduate) have been selected among all entries which are open to students from all 72 UK universities partnering with Santander Universities.
"We really didn’t expect to go through to the final stage of the competition; we've been told it has been the most competitive year since its inception. We are really excited and proud to represent Cardiff University in the finals and can’t wait!" Memet added.
Incepto Media will present their idea to a panel of judges on 30th June 2014. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony held in Santander headquarters on 1st July 2014 where the top cash prize is £20,000.
