Two Cardiff students have capped a year of international sporting achievement with nominations for the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2009.
Nathan Cleverly, a maths student and Jamie Roberts, a medical student have both been named in the shortlist for the award after outstanding performances in boxing and rugby respectively.
Nathan, a light-heavyweight boxer, has set his sights on the European crown after an impressive year which saw him pick up the British title. With 18 victories to his name Nathan has emerged as one of Wales’ brightest boxing talents.
Jamie has made his mark on regional and international rugby, playing for the Cardiff Blues and representing Wales in the Six Nations tournament. In April Jamie was selected for the British and Irish Lion’s tour of South Africa and was named player of the tour.
The pair are joined on the shortlist by golfer Becky Brewerton, footballer Ryan Giggs, women’s rugby player Louise Rickard and cyclist Geraint Thomas.
The winner will be decided by the Welsh public and will be announced on BBC Wales Today on Monday 7 December between 6.30pm – 7.00pm. The main awards show will be broadcast on BBC Two Wales at 10.35pm on Tuesday 8th December.
