Professor David BoucherProfessor David Boucher

Two Cardiff Professors have been recognised for their significant contributions to social science and its promotion - cementing the University’s place as one of the top institutions in the UK to have Academicians of the Academy of Social Sciences amongst its staff.

Professor David Boucher, Head of the School of European Studies and Professor Rick Delbridge, Associate Dean for Research in Cardiff Business School were conferred the Award of Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS) in the most recent round of nominations.

Their awards mean that Cardiff now has 24 members of staff who are recognised as Academicians of the Academy of Social Sciences.

The Academy is the voice of the social sciences in the UK. Recipients of the Award are drawn from academic, policy making and practitioner backgrounds. As Academicians they support the Academy’s mission of promoting social sciences for the public benefit by helping to respond to Government consultations on behalf of the social science community, organise events and seminars and sponsor a number of schemes that promote the social sciences.

Professor Boucher has written extensively about social and political theory and is internationally recognised for his work in this area. His major publications have focused on a diverse range of topics from the role of human rights in international relations to an examination of how Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen transformed pop music into a literary form. He was recently appointed as a Visiting Global Professorial Fellow at the National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and his books have been translated in many languages including Japanese, Arabic, Serbian, Polish and Chinese.

Professor Rick Delbridge

Professor Rick Delbridge is Professor of Organizational Analysis at Cardiff Business School. He has extensive experience of researching and teaching various aspects of organization and management theory and has made a considerable contribution to the Business and Management academic community, particularly in the UK, in his role as a Senior Fellow of the ESRC/EPSRC Advanced Institute of Management Research, as a member of the British Academy of Management’s Research Committee, as Associate Editor of Organization and Editorial board member of Organization Studies, Human Relations, Journal of Management Studies and Academy of Management Review.

Professor Teresa Rees, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research at Cardiff and herself an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences said: "These latest AcSS awards confirm that Cardiff research continues to make a valuable impact on the major issues facing society.
