Cardiff is joining forces with one of Wales' leading organisations in a bid to share expert knowledge in sustainable energy research and carbon efficiency.
Cardiff University and SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy PLC) – owner of Wales’ leading energy company, SWALEC - have signed a joint working agreement providing the company with access to some of the University’s world-leading experts, knowledge and most promising students.
Signing the agreement on behalf of Cardiff University, Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant said: "We are delighted to be embarking on this new partnership with SSE. Cardiff University has some of the UK’s leading experts in energy and waste engineering, as well as in energy efficiency, smart-grid technology and the creation of a sustainable built environment.
"This agreement will help the University to share and apply this expert knowledge and research capability - not only for the benefit of our research and our students, but also for the quality of life of people living in Wales."
The agreement will see the two organisations share knowledge in key priority areas for Wales including: energy engineering and biomass, waste engineering and pollution control and creating a low-carbon environment.
Ian Marchant, Chief Executive of Scottish and Southern Energy said: "This new partnership will help us forge a strong, mutually beneficial relationship between the two organisations.
"Businesses and universities have a huge amount to learn from each other. SSE will learn from Cardiff University's pioneering research, and as the UK’s most diverse energy company, SSE will provide researchers and students alike with a real insight into the practical challenges facing the energy sector."
As part of the agreement both organisations will be able to access a larger and more diverse pool of knowledge and skills, create and share the benefits of world-class research, as well as creating teaching, training and recruitment opportunities.
The agreement was formally signed by Dr David Grant and Ian Marchant at a ceremony at the University this week.
