As the new academic year gets underway many of you will have noticed a new look to Park Place with the launch of our Student High Street. Head of Student Advisory Services Ben Lewis tells us more about this exciting initiative.
"I’m really proud of the support services we offer students here at the University. For so many of our students coming to University is the most amazing but at the same time can be the most challenging time of their lives and the support we offer them is invaluable.
Despite offering pretty much everything students need through their educational lifetime we often hear them tell us they didn’t know a certain service existed or had no idea where to find it, which is one of the reasons we’re launching the Student High Street.
One of the main aims of the High Street is to improve awareness and understanding of the facilities and services on Park Place – both in terms of where to find them and what they offer. By giving the High Street a strong and vibrant identity we hope both students and staff will relate to it and perhaps notice services and buildings they otherwise wouldn’t have known were there.
Lamp post flags have been placed outside all of the key buildings on Park Place to both inspire and inform. These will be in place for the next 6 weeks and then beyond that time waypointer flags will continue to provide permanent coverage for each of our key services.
As we’re embark upon Freshers’ Week when thousands of students descend on the University campus ‘High Street Ambassadors’ will be on hand to offer help and advice as well as introducing the services available.
Another important reason for launching the High Street brand is community – that is the student community, the staff community and collectively the Cardiff University community.
Being a vast campus spread over different parts of the city it’s hard to hold onto that sense of belonging and pride that I think students and staff have about being part of such an interesting and diverse organisation. We hope the branding now in situ on Park Place as well as the activities we have planned throughout Freshers’ Week and beyond will help reignite that sense of celebration and excitement.
We’re encouraging students to interact with each other on the High Street by following us on Twitter @StudentHighSt and using the hashtag #studenthighstreet. It would be great if staff could join in those discussions and perhaps offer words of advice and welcome to our incoming and returning students."
