Pitch perfect

17 November 2010

Training ground action

Visiting rugby teams from the Southern Hemisphere have been fine-tuning their game at the University ahead of their Autumn International matches with Wales.

The South African rugby team recently used the newly refurbished Cardiff University Sports Training Village to prepare for their clash with Wales – which they narrowly won.

They are followed by Fiji and New Zealand who will perfect their game plan at the Training Village and the University’s sports fields in Llanrumny for their forthcoming matches on 19 and 27 November respectively.

Team training at Cardiff University

Head of Sport, Stuart Vanstone said: "The facilities at the Sports Training Village are an ideal pre-game training location for teams of this calibre. The University is increasingly becoming recognised as a performance-focused environment where teams can prepare ahead of important fixtures."

Recently the University was confirmed as an official games-time training venue for Olympic football for the 2012 Games. Alongside this, the International Amateur Boxing Association will hold their pre-Olympic games training camp at The Sports Training Village and the University will also host the Australian Paralympic wheelchair basketball squad ahead of the Paralympic Games.

"Cardiff University is at the forefront of Olympic activity in Wales," added Stuart Vanstone. "These camps will bring real sporting and economic benefit to Cardiff and Wales as the Olympic teams and their fans visit the city."
