On Tuesday 9 June, hundreds of staff across the University will be marking the anniversary of the start of Cardiff University’s Life share Scheme and National liftshare Day, by asking their colleagues to simply give it a go.

With more than 250 University car-sharers already signed up to the Scheme, they are hoping to welcome even more members to join them in one of the easiest ways to save money and the environment.

Peter McDonnell, the University’s Life share Scheme Manager said: "Giving lift sharing a go couldn’t be simpler. With 261 members and 245 separate journeys registered, there is bound to be someone going your way, and the potential cost savings are pretty significant.

"Since the beginning of this year alone, we have estimated that our members have collectively saved more than £15,000, more than 73,000 miles and 24 tonnes of Co2.

"Car sharing in an integral part of the University’s Sustainable Travel Plan and we have had a great first three years. Having our own liftshare scheme has meant that we are able to alleviate some of the parking problems across our campuses, support staff and the University in reducing carbon emissions, and help our members save money too. What we need now are more members so we can match even more journeys"

One staff member who is a firm supporter of the University’s car sharing scheme is Helen Calvert, Postgraduate Secretary in Cardiff Law School. Helen joined Cardiff’s liftshare in October last, traveling to work everyday from Talbot Green in Rhondda Cynon Taff. Helen estimates that she has already saved in the region of £250 through car sharing.

Helen said: "I am so grateful for the lift share Scheme, and I know my fellow passenger is too as she has literally halved her journey time not having to catch the bus anymore. I’ve not only been able to save money, but I have made a brilliant friend in the process. It really is a win-win situation all round."

Car-sharing is completely flexible as people only need do it on the days that are convenient to them, but even sharing once a week can make a difference to the bank balance. The online network matches people with similar journeys so they can travel better together.
