The Wales Deanery has been recognised with a national award for its family friendly policies.

The Deanery received the highest number of votes in a UK-wide survey for the most Family-Friendly Deanery led by the Medical Women’s Federation. The survey explored areas including the organisation of rotas for junior doctors, cover for colleagues on maternity/sick leave, availability of advice and help with childcare and Less than full time training. This service is open to trainee Foundation years one and two, Speciality Trainees, Specialist Registrars and GP Registrars.

Professor Derek Gallen, Postgraduate Dean and Head of the School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education said: "The Wales Deanery is delighted to receive the Medical Women’s Federation Award for 'The Most Family-Friendly Deanery in the UK'. One of our core values is our commitment to equality of opportunity and the emphasis we place on diversity. We are very proud of the benefits that we offer to medical and dental professionals training in Wales and feel honoured to be recognised by the Federation for our efforts in this area."

The award was presented to Sub Dean Dr Sally Davies at a recent House of Lords dinner hosted by Baroness Ruth Deech, who chaired the Working Party for the 2009 Chief Medical Officer’s Report Women Doctors Making a Difference.

Positive comments about the Trusts and Deaneries nominated included:

· "I was able to do a fairly unusual part-time rota which is very flexible for my childcare, but also has advantages for the department. I work 50%. I do 2 days a week fixed which is ideal for nursery. The extra half days I save up and work a full week which is good for grandparent child care, adds to my training and helps if other trainees are on leave"

· "The surgical department were extremely helpful and took the view that they would prefer one less-than-full-time training hard working person than have a vacancy"

· "The Childcare voucher scheme is easy to set up"
