A training camp hosted by the University to help promising amateur boxers from developing nations qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games has been recognised with an award.

The ‘Road to London’ training camp has been awarded a Bronze Medal for the British Council Award for Innovative International Collaboration at the Podium Awards.

Run by the Amateur International Boxing Association and supported by the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association, the camp utilised the University’s extensive training facilities and was supported by the Welsh Government, and Sport Wales.

68 male and female boxers from representing 44 different countries benefitted from the intensive three-week pre-Games training camp, designed to help them get in shape for Olympic pre-qualifying competitions.

At their disposal were three boxing rings, 15 punchbags and the latest in conditioning equipment. The training schedule included conditioning work, bag and pad work, and sparring, under the expert eye of an experienced coaching team led by National Coach for Wales, Colin Jones, himself an Olympic boxing competitor from the 1976 Games in Montreal.

Cardiff’s Head of Sport, Stuart Vanstone who accepted the award at a ceremony in London said: "We are very pleased to be recognised in front of our peers from the sector for the significant work and planning that has gone into the University’s Olympic activities. There are four Olympic programmes running at the University which and will help promote the University, Cardiff and Wales on a global scale. The Road to London boxing camps evidence the strength of stakeholder and partner organisations collaborating to provide unique and exciting opportunities and I hope that this engagement will continue as a legacy of the Games."

As well as the International Amateur Boxing Association’s pre-games training camp, the University is also hosting Olympic football games-time training, and the Australian Paralympic wheelchair basketball squad.

Stuart added: "The University has extensive experience of hosting international sports teams and a range of high-quality sporting facilities. We look forward to welcoming world-class footballers and the Australian Paralympic wheelchair basketball squad to Cardiff and Wales to prepare for the Olympic and Paralympic Games."

Podium is the Further and Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Games. The Podium Awards is a prestigious one-off celebration recognising the vital role colleges and universities across the UK have played in delivering the London 2012 Games.
