Medical underwriters and claims assessors attended the Assessing and Managing Medical Risk for Insurers course, the first of its kind, held at Cardiff.

The course builds on the University’s award-winning track record in providing specialist medical courses for underwriters and claims assessors, and was developed following extensive research and feedback from the industry. Covering four key medical areas- Cardiology, Neurology, Mental Health and Diabetes - delegates learnt about the symptoms, prognosis, and treatments involved, and the specific issues to consider in relation to underwriting and claims assessments.

The University adopted a blended learning approach for the programme. Delegates completed a number of online modules at a time that was convenient for them, before attending two days of face to face workshops at the University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning.

In addition to covering some of the more complex aspects of the four medical areas, the workshops focussed on applying medical theory directly to underwriting and claims cases, so delegates could see immediate benefit and impact on their roles. The delegates, from a range of different companies were also able to share experience and best practice with others working in their industry.

Similar training has in the past proved to have significant impact on the organisations attending, with tangible benefits reported including: cost savings from a reduction in cases referred to external medical experts; a reduction in errors and improved quality in decisions; quicker decision making, resulting in improved customer service; increased delegate confidence; and increased confidence from reinsurers.
