The University’s Library Service recently welcomed delegates from across the UK to Cardiff for the annual SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries) conference.
The UK-wide conference for Directors of Library Services featured presentations, discussions and parallel sessions around the theme of ‘Planning for the future’. Over 120 representatives from university and national libraries throughout the UK attended to hear presentations from as far afield as Berlin and Tennessee and participate in lively panel discussions.
Cardiff co-hosted the conference, along with the Library Services of Glamorgan and Newport Universities, and UWIC.
The event also consisted of parallel sessions on ‘Budgeting for the future’, ‘Future technologies’, and ‘Future libraries’. Janet Peters, Director of Cardiff University Libraries, presented on a collaborative visit to see how libraries in Germany were responding to the changing requirements of their users, and representatives were also given a tour of Cardiff’s SCONUL award-winning Trevithick Library.
"This was a great event to be involved in", said Janet Peters, Director of Cardiff University Libraries. "It was a real coup for Cardiff to host the event, along with our colleagues from Glamorgan and Newport. I think the event has shown that the ways libraries are used today is very different from just five years ago, and that we have to change how we work to continue to meet the needs of our users.
"It was very interesting to discuss the role that the wider Higher Education sector, as well as technological developments, will impact upon this provision", continued Janet. "In the future, it will become ever more important to provide evidence of the very real benefits that libraries bring to education and society."
