Two members of Cardiff University staff are in the running for a Leading Wales Award 2008.
Professor Julie Williams, School of Medicine and Sam Smith, chair of Cardiff University’s student-led volunteering charity Student Volunteering Cardiff, have been short listed in recognition of their unique leadership that is helping to make a difference to the lives of people living across Wales, and move their work or organisation forward.
Nominated by colleagues in the University, Professor Williams and Sam have been short listed by a panel of judges and will be joining 25 other finalists at an awards ceremony in February.
Professor Williams is a finalist in the Team Leader category as a result of her inspirational, inclusive and collaborative leadership that is making a difference to the world of psychiatric genetics, and the staff around her. Professor Julie Williams is leading a team of UK experts studying DNA samples taken from 14,000 people worldwide in search of the genes that not only predispose people to Alzheimer’s, but which can protect them from developing the disease too.Sam, a 24-year old postgraduate student and chair of one of the largest student volunteering organisations, is in the running for the Young Leader award for directing SVC as an organisation which attracts diverse groups of volunteers and makes a difference to the community of Cardiff. This year Student Volunteering Cardiff (SVC) achieved Investing in Volunteers recognition. The award is the UK quality standard for organisations which involve volunteers in their work. Cardiff University is the first higher education institution in the UK to achieve this award.
The Team Leader and Young Leader awards are two of seven categories including leadership in the public sector, in the voluntary and not-for-profit sector, in a small business, in a large corporate business, and leadership success through partnership.
Professor Williams and Sam will attend a panel interview in January and the winners will be announced at an awards lunch and ceremony on Thursday 21 February 2008. To follow their progress, visit www.leadingwalesawards.com
