A Cardiff academic whose research aims to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from life-threatening genetic conditions has been recognised for her work.
Professor Meena Upadhyaya of the Institute of Medical Genetics, School of Medicine has been awarded the Inspire Wales Award in Science and Technology.
Spanning several decades, Professor Upadhyaya has gained an international reputation for her work. Her research has led to major improvements in the diagnosis of inherited disorders including neurofibromatosis and muscular dystrophy.
Speaking about the award, Professor Upadhyaya said: "I am highly honoured and extremely delighted to receive the Inspire Wales Award in Science and Technology for 2010 that recognises my life-long efforts. I hope the award will bring further recognition for the research and development work conducted at the Institute of Medical Genetics and that it will help to inspire other people, especially women, in Wales to pursue careers in science and medicine."
Professor Upadhyaya is Head of the NHS Research and Development Genetics laboratory and an Honorary Professor at the Institute of Medical Genetics.
The Inspire Wales Awards are an initiative of the Institute of Welsh Affairs. They celebrate major achievements of men and women throughout Wales in the categories of business, education, science, arts and media, the environment, sport and citizenship.
Other University staff shortlisted for the 2010 Awards were: Professor Derek Gallen, School of Postgraduate Dental and Medical Education in the Educator category; and Professor Anthony Griffiths, School of Engineering in the Science and Technology category.
