A high-level Chinese Government delegation has visited the University, learning more about research links with China and visiting the Confucius Institute’s new language suite.
The delegation represented HANBAN, the Office of Chinese Language Council International charged with promoting Chinese language and culture abroad. They are responsible for Confucius Institutes - an initiative launched in 2005 to promote learning about China internationally.
Two members of the governing body of HANBAN, who are also members of the Chinese State Council, chose to visit Cardiff’s Confucius Institute as part of a tour of the UK, accompanied by HANBAN's Deputy Director-General. The party wished to learn more about the development of the Institute since it was launched in early 2008.
The delegation also learned more about Cardiff University's links with China through a series of presentations led by Professor Stephen Denyer, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education and Students. Professor Wen Jiang (School of Medicine) and Dr Xiangjiang Zhan (School of Biosciences) both gave talks about their research partnerships.
The following day, the party visited the Cardiff Confucius Institute itself at the Centre for Lifelong Learning. They heard reports on its progress and about the way in which the work of Institutes is changing as more mature.
The group expressed warm support for the work of the Cardiff Confucius Institute. They took special note of the integration of the teaching of Chinese, including library facilities, with other language provision at the Centre for Lifelong Learning. As well as the Library, the group visited the newly-completed Confucius Language Suite and took part in an informal opening ceremony.
None of the party had visited Cardiff before. They also visited different parts of the City and were very impressed. On their departure the delegation were unanimous in their appreciation of a stimulating educational and cultural experience and the warmth of the welcome they had received.
