Sixty pupils from schools in South East Wales have been exploring university life during a recent visit to the School of Computer Science & Informatics.

Pupils from Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School in Barry and Croesyceiliog School in Cwmbran, spent time in the School’s computer labs getting an insight into computer programming as well as developing skills such as teamwork, communication, problem solving and planning.

In addition to activities in the labs, the pupils were challenged to work in teams to build a tower from only balloons and tape, with one group successfully building tower two metres high. The pupils also had an opportunity to chat to current students over lunch and attend a demonstration on mobile forensics.

Helen Phillips who coordinated the visit for the School said: "It’s great to welcome so many keen pupils to the School and introduce them to the subject area of Computer Science & Informatics, making them aware of the key skills required and the variety of careers paths available.

"We hope the activities they took part in throughout the day will inspire them to consider higher education as a thoroughly worthwhile and achievable ambition and also unearth some future computer scientists."

The visit was one of four hosted by the School designed to increase awareness in higher education and raise the educational aspirations of pupils from schools without a strong tradition of participation in this area.
