21 February 2013
The University and Students’ Union are celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight (25th February – 10th March 2013) with a range of special promotions and offers.
Cardiff University (including the Students’ Union) was awarded Fairtrade status by the Fairtrade Foundation in June 2007, and is committed to supporting, promoting and using Fairtrade goods.
The Fairtrade Foundation is calling on the British public to ‘Go Further for Fairtrade in 2013’ to look after the food we love and the people who grow it. Without our support now, farmers in developing countries face a difficult and uncertain future. Choosing Fairtrade is one way to help secure a better deal for millions of people in developing countries.
It is now so easy to choose from a wide range of products, from supermarket own label to premium brands – great products offering good value and decent values too.
Neil Crotty, Unit Manager of the University’s Coffeshops and Cybercafes said: "To start the day, people can pull on a Fairtrade cotton t-shirt, eat a nourishing bowl of Fairtrade cereal or drink a glass of Fairtrade fruit juice. At the end of the day, they can celebrate their steps with a glass of Fairtrade wine or a bar of delicious chocolate. With over 4,500 products to choose from, deciding to buy a Fairtrade product couldn’t be easier."
The Students’ Union will be hosting Fairtrade stalls throughout the fortnight in the main Students’ Union building promoting Fairtrade awareness and produce.
Campus Services Division will be running offers on a variety of Fairtrade products in coffee shops, including a special £1.80 deal for a hot drink and Fairtrade flapjack or muffin. There will also be opportunities to sample Fairtrade cakes at tasting stands in Tower/Biosciences coffee shops (4th March) & Humanities/Aberconway coffee shops (5th March). There will be a Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream van offering free Fairtrade ice-cream in the Humanities/JHB car park on the 7th March, and free coffee will be available from a Barista Bike in the Biosciences Foyer on the 5th March.
Staff can also get involved and organise their own events to promote the Fortnight. For example, Information Services will be holding a variety of competitions for its staff, including a ‘Fairtrade Bakeoff’ & staff in Purchasing will be holding a Fairtrade stall in Mckenzie House.
