Space exploration equipment from the School of Physics and Astronomy is forming part of a new exhibition at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales.
Mars in their Eyes is an exhibition of 80 cartoons telling the story of space exploration and scientific discovery, past, present and future in a humorous and satirical way. And for the exhibition’s visit to Cardiff, it has been extended to include other aspects of space exploration, including components of space telescopes developed by the Astronomy Instrumentation Group in the School of Physics and Astronomy.
On Friday 7 March Professor Mike Edmunds, School of Physics and Astronomy will be giving a free lunchtime talk: Life on a young planet: why we need to go to Mars, against the backdrop of the new exhibition.
Drawings about the red planet and space exploration, collected by Professor Colin Pillinger of the Open University, make up the show. The drawings on display are each accompanied by a snippet of information about the science and engineering behind the image. Funded by a contribution from the STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council, Science in Society Programme), the aim is to bring the excitement of space science to a wider public audience through the medium of cartoon art.
The University’s involvement in Mars in their Eyes is the latest in a series of projects successfully established as a result of the ongoing partnership between Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales. The University has also recently led a bid in partnership with the University of Glamorgan, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, Techniquest and BBC Wales to become Wales’ only Beacon for Public Engagement. The Beacon for Wales will now lead Welsh universities in making wider contributions to society through engaging communities more fully in their work.
Life on a young planet: why we need to go to Mars starts at 1.05pm at Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, Cathays Park.
