Vice President of the European Commission, Margot Wallström has visited Cardiff University.

In her first visit to Wales Vice President Wallström took part in a "European Question Time" with the First Minister Rhodri Morgan hosted by the Cardiff School of European Studies and the Welsh Assembly. The event was chaired by Professor Teresa Rees, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research.

Professor Rees said: "The University was pleased to welcome Vice President Wallström to Wales. Cardiff School of European Studies is at the cutting edge of research on Europe and our staff and students added to what was a lively debate on Europe."

Mrs Wallström also attended the launch of the new European Sources Online at the ‘South Wales Europe Direct Information Centre’. The University’s Information Services Directorate hosts the Centre as part of a nationwide network of twenty five Europe Direct Information Centres. The Centre has long been the editorial base of European Sources Online (ESO), and has now also taken over the publishing of the service. ESO is a major source of information about the European Union and the countries of Europe for researchers in the UK and world-wide. It contains approximately 150,000 sources of information with as many as 1,000 sources added each month.

Ian Thomson, Director of the South Wales Europe Direct Information Centre, said: "ESO is now a key aspect of the activities of the Centre a service which will be of great value to the citizens, students and civil society of South Wales, but also to a much wider audience in Europe and the rest of the world."
