University dental graduate Craig Lewis has been named St David`s Hospital dental student of the year.

Craig Lewis, who has just graduated from the University’s School of Dentistry, is the 3rd winner of Cardiff St David’s Hospital prize.

The award, voted by all staff at the St David's Dental Care Unit, recognises the University dental student who has displayed the highest levels of professionalism, clinical competence and teamwork during their clinical placement.

Mr John Llewelyn, Dental Clinical lecturer at St David’s Dental Care Unit said: "On behalf of all staff at the Unit, I congratulate Craig on his award and achievement.

"His consistent dedication, commitment to high standards and clinical competence while at the Unit is a real credit to the profession. We wish him the very best in his future dental career."

Established in May 2002 the Unit is designed to combine community dental care with teaching and offers the opportunity for fifth-year dental students to take responsibility for patients.

Each student treats on average six patients per day and works, under supervision, towards their individual diagnosis and treatment.

The Dental Care Unit's surgeries are equipped with the latest dental technology including digital radiography intra-oral cameras. The technology enables patients to see inside their own mouths to help understand the reasons for their treatment

In addition, operating microscope aid the management of more complex cases and four surgeries are all equipped for treatment under inhalation sedation. The award, an engraved `Alegra` LED handpiece provided by award sponsor W&H, was presented at a ceremony at the Unit this week.

There will also be a second outreach unit starting at the end of 2011 in Mountain Ash, where final year Cardiff University dental students will be attending to help enhance their clinical experience and skills.
