Professor Ole Petersen, Director of the School of Biosciences, has been appointed as Honorary Professor at Jinan National University (JNU) in Guangzhou, one of China’s 100 Key National Universities.
Professor Petersen CBE FRS, one of the most distinguished figures in international biomedical research, travelled to China recently to accept the appointment at a special award ceremony.
During the course of his visit, Cardiff’s Chinese links were further strengthened with the announcement that JNU will now annually send postgraduate research students to study at the School of Biosciences. The students will study initially for Master of Research degrees, and later for doctorates. It is expected that there will be an annual intake of up to 5 postgraduate students from 2012. Jinan’s Medical College and the School of Biosciences will also begin working towards Joint Laboratory status.
Professor Petersen said: "I am confident that we shall have a very good and mutually profitable collaboration with JNU and look forward to receiving the first excellent students from JNU in Cardiff."
Professor Luo Huanmin, Executive Dean of the Medical College at JNU, said: "I believe that our collaboration will succeed and yield substantial results."
Professor Petersen also delivered a lecture at JNU on recent changes in assessment and funding for biomedical research in Europe and the UK. This was based on his experience as Chair of the European Research Council’s Starting Grant Panel for Physiology, Pathophysiology & Endocrinology, as well as his recent appointment as Chair of the Biological Sciences Panel for the UK government’s new assessment of research quality in UK universities.
