15 April 2011
Leading economist Will Hutton will speak on the economic crisis and fairness in a public lecture at the University.
Hosted by the School of History, Archaeology and Religion and run as part of the Keynes seminar series, the talk takes place on 18 May 2011.
Best known for his book The State We’re In (1995), seen at the time as setting the scene for the Blair revolution, Will has worked both on radio and TV and spent four years as editor-in-chief of the Observer.
He is executive vice-chair of The Work Foundation and is currently working on a new book called Them and Us – a timely examination of fairness and due dessert in the current economic climate. Most recently, he has been asked by the Prime Minister to chair the Public Sector Fair Pay Review.
Speaking about the lecture, Dr Scott Newton, School of History, Archaeology and Religion said: "Will Hutton is an acute commentator whose books from The State We’re in to Them and Us have helped to shape the political and economic agenda of the centre-left in Britain for the best part of a generation".
All are welcome to attend the lecture, which is free of change but booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment. To reserve a place please email firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 029 2087 6935.
The lecture starts at 6.30pm on 18 May at the Julian Hodge Lecture Theatre, Julian Hodge Building, Colum Drive, Cardiff.
The Keynes seminar series, named after the great economist John Maynard Keynes, has consistently explored themes and issues in recent British political and economic history. Speakers have addressed the problems which preoccupied Keynes himself, notably the ability of modern democratic society to deliver high levels of employment, social security and a more equal distribution of wealth to its citizens.
