Commitment to women in science recognised

Bronze Athena Swan Charter for women in science

Cardiff University’s commitment to women in science has been recognised with a national accolade.

The University has received the Athena Swan Bronze Award in recognition of its success in recruiting, retaining and promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET).

Cardiff is one of only 19 universities nationwide to have been awarded a prestigious bronze award of 2009 under the Athena SWAN Charter for Women in Science.

The Charter commends good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology (SET) in higher education and research.

The judges praised the University’s "impressive" submission and highlighted the Positive Working Environment initiative and the Women Professors’ Group. The University's flexible working policies were also applauded along with support for staff returning to work from maternity leave.

Vice-Chancellor, Dr David Grant said: "The Athena Swan Bronze award further enhances the University’s long-standing reputation for teaching and research excellence in science, engineering and technology disciplines. This award demonstrates the University’s commitment to academic excellence and to equality of opportunity and inclusiveness across the institution."

Professor Terry Threadgold, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Staff and Diversity led a group supported by Isabella Santamaria, Equality and Diversity Manager, Human Resources to prepare the submission and develop an action plan for future initiatives. They collected the award on behalf of the University at a celebratory lunch at Birmingham Botanical Gardens (29 September).

Isabella Santamaria, Equality and Diversity Manager said: "This is another positive step forward to embedding equality and diversity throughout Cardiff University."

Athena SWAN is funded jointly by the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (UKRC) and Equality Challenge Unit (ECU).
