Months of demanding challenges have paid off for twenty University staff with the completion of the ‘Practical Leadership for University Management’ programme.
Staff from across the University’s academic schools and support divisions completed the programme, which develops their leadership and management skills. The course develops practical leadership and management skills in a University context. The participants were required to apply the learning continuously in their workplaces as the course progressed. They were supported throughout the programme by a peer learning group, a mentor, online resources and the programme co-ordinator.
Twenty people received their Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) certificates from the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Staff and Diversity, Professor Terry Threadgold at a reception in the Council Chamber.
Professor Threadgold told those receiving their certificates: "Every single one of you who has taken the trouble to be part of the programme helps us take our agenda of diversity, courtesy and respect forward across the University. What is also remarkable about the programme is the way it helps constructs networks and communities across the University. After people have finished the course, they continue working with each other and engaging with other on the issues that have arisen."
Responding for the course members, Dr Dai John, Senior Lecturer in the Welsh School of Pharmacy, said: "The course has provided us with skills which will help us and our colleagues in the workplace. It’s been challenging, stimulating and above all, enjoyable."
The programme has been designed and developed by Cardiff University for both academic and administrative staff who already manage significant resources, projects and/or teams of people and is accredited as an Endorsed Award by ILM. Since 2007, when the programme began, 34 members of staff have successfully completed it; 32 are in the process of completing it and a new cohort will start in December. The programme starts in May and December every year.
