Celebrating SURE

20 October 2010

The University’s Support Unit for Research Evidence (SURE) is celebrating its 10th year of providing healthcare staff and policy makers with reliable, up-to-date evidence reviews.

SURE was established in 2000 in the Information Services Directorate. The Unit originally worked on developing the Health Evidence Bulletins Wales (HEBW) project, which provided summaries of the best available evidence across a range of topic areas and were widely used in healthcare and policy development.

Since then, the team has built an excellent reputation for its work in evidence-based health and social science. During the last decade, staff in the Unit have co-authored 52 publications including 41 systematic reviews and been awarded around £2,000,000 in grant income.

SURE’s achievements have been celebrated with a specially-designed timeline exhibition at the University. This was officially launched during an evening reception attended by SURE collaborators and supporters, including Chief Medical Officer for Wales, Dr Tony Jewell.

Dr Jewell, a strong proponent of the role of systematic review work in underpinning policy development and a supporter of SURE’s work in this area, said: "I would like to congratulate SURE on this milestone. One has to only look at the impact the Health Evidence Bulletins had on the medical community, and how widely they have been used, to see that the expertise of the Unit is in as much demand today as it was a decade ago."

Professor Elizabeth Treasure, Cardiff University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, has worked closely with the Unit on a long-running oral health project. She said: "The support that SURE provides to academics in advising on evidence-based research is absolutely vital to the integrity of the University’s research. In my work with SURE, I have really appreciated their professionalism, knowledge, and the experience that they bring to the field. Long may their invaluable advice continue to inform the research of Cardiff University and further afield!"

Director of Libraries Janet Peters added: "I am absolutely delighted that SURE has reached its 10th birthday, which is no mean feat in such a competitive funding environment. Their success is down to the excellence and enthusiasm of their staff, which should enable them to continue flying the flag for evidence-based medicine for many more years to come".

SURE staff members have authored an extensive list of systematic evidence reviews, and work in partnership with other Cardiff University researchers on a range of projects. They also teach vital evidence-based methodologies to students, researchers and health professionals within and beyond the University.
