Care of the dying

09 March 2009

Cardiff University Science in Health Public Lectures booklet

The ways in which people can help enhance the quality of life for dying people is one of the subjects covered at a public lecture held at the University.

Professor Ilora Finlay, Consultant in Palliative Medicine & Chronic Pain at the University, will give a lecture entitled ‘Care of the dying is everyone’s concern’ on Thursday 12th March 2009.

Professor Finlay will discuss the fears that many people have around death and dying and the positive ways that people can help others to enhance their quality of life. She will also dispel some of the myths around end of life care.

In the light of recent press and television coverage of assisted suicide, Professor Finlay will address the assisted suicide debate and the evolution of the arguments surrounding this, as well as exploring implications for medicine and society.

The lecture is free and takes place in the Large Chemistry Lecture theatre, Main Building. Refreshments are available from 7.00pm, and the lecture starts at 7.30pm.

Care of the Dying is everyone’s concern’ is part of Cardiff’s Science in Health Public Lecture series, which take place throughout the year.

Topics covered to date include obesity, nanomedicine and the science behind leukaemia. The next lecture will be on 2 April 2009 and will explore the links between diet and cancer. A full programme of events can be downloaded here.
