Varsity triumph for Cardiff

Cardiff students have beaten rivals Swansea in the Welsh Varsity competition, securing the Varsity Shield and winning back the Varsity Cup for the University.

In an impressive sporting display, Cardiff students beat their Swansea counterparts across more than 20 different sports including basketball, squash and football, to scoop the Varsity Shield.

At the end of the day (2 May), the University’s rugby team took to the pitch at the Millennium Stadium to fight for the Varsity Cup, captained by Jake Cooper-Woolley.

Broadcast live on S4C, the fast-paced game showcased the best in Cardiff and Swansea’s rugby talent. Two penalties gave Swansea an early lead but by half time, Cardiff had taken command of the game and led Swansea by 15 points to 6.

In the second half, Cardiff extended their lead resulting in a comprehensive victory and a final score of 33-13.

More than 2500 spectators attended events throughout the day at the Welsh Institute of Sport to cheer on their teams and a crowd of 16,000 gathered at the Millennium Stadium to watch the rugby match.
