A Cardiff professor has become the surprise star of a BBC reality show looking for the UK’s next top designer.
Professor Richard Weston, of the Welsh School of Architecture, features in the seven-part series Britain's Next Best Thing which follows a group of amateur designers as they try and impress high-street giants Boots, Habitat and Liberty’s.
In the show, which airs in April, Professor Weston and his innovative fabric designs join more than 750 creative hopefuls at Liberty’s Best of British Design Open Call, where they pitch their handiwork to the store’s buyers. Over the course of the series the inspired academic, who uses high-resolution scans of naturally-occurring minerals and fossils in his designs, works with experts in the industry to develop his collection.
As a result of his success on the show, Professor Weston's scarves now sit alongside world-renowned names such as Alexander McQueen on the shelves of London's Liberty store.
Speaking about his appearance in the series Professor Weston said: ‘Liberty’s, with its roots in the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, is where I always thought my scarves belonged. Having the process of making them filmed from start to finish was a complete delight – and will hopefully lead to a buying frenzy!’
To celebrate the imminent screening of Britain’s Next Best Thing, Professor Weston will be delivering a public lecture entitled Transformations: Minerals, Digital Manufacturing and Architecture on Wednesday 30th March at 6.30pm in the Bute Building. In his talk, Professor Weston will share his research and experience in using natural materials to generate digitally manufactured products for architecture and design.
