The latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008) shows that world-leading research is being undertaken throughout Cardiff University. Based on Research Power the University is ranked 15th this time - reflecting the new enlarged University and the consolidation that has taken place. The majority of research areas submitted for assessment are in the top ten in the UK based on one of the range of accepted measures.
Almost 60 per cent of all research at Cardiff University is assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent - 4* and 3* the top two categories of assessment. Remarkably, 33 out of 34 research areas submitted by the University for assessment by independent panels of experts are shown to be undertaking research that includes work that is "world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour."
"I am delighted that the world-leading research being undertaken at Cardiff is being recognised as such and I congratulate staff," said Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant.
Changes in the Assessment methods have been made such that each research unit has a graded profile rather than a single number score. Institutional rankings are generally based on the average grade achieved - this would have placed a combined Cardiff University and University of Wales College of Medicine around 22nd in 2001, around the same position such tables place us in 2008. Another ranking method is research power, which reflects both the quality of research and the number of staff submitted. This would have placed a combined Cardiff University and University of Wales College of Medicine around 15th last time, the same position such tables place us in 2008.
