The School of Biosciences’ new "front door" is open for business, creating an attractive entrance area for staff, students and visitors alike.

The new extension, with its distinctive multi-colour hexagonal façade, was designed by Rio Architects to represent cell structures, at the heart of all the world-leading research and teaching work conducted inside the School.

The two-storey extension contains a reception, student administrative facilities, seminar rooms and a completely new student cafeteria. The development has also freed up space further inside the School for more teaching and research facilities.

Deputy Director of the School, Professor John Harwood, said: "The School very much welcomes the opening of this development. We now have a new entrance which is much more in keeping with our status as one of the larger departments in Cardiff University. The extension also provides enhanced facilities for student-focused activities. It has been gratifying to hear many favourable comments from both staff and students - I've also heard members of the public alluding favourably to its striking design!"

The new development, to be named in honour of Professor Sir Martin Evans, the School’s 2007 Nobel Prize-Winner for Medicine, will be formally opened with a ceremony in the New Year.
