Interfaith Dialogue

07 June 2007

Archbishop of Westminster and international expert on Islam discuss religion and faith in the modern world.

Cardiff University is to welcome the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, and international expert on Islam, Dr Jamal Badawi, to discuss religion and faith in the modern world.

The Cardinal and Dr Badawi will be speaking on "Interfaith Dialogue - Christian and Muslim Perspective" at an event (Saturday June 9) jointly hosted by the Muslim Council for Wales and Cardiff University’s Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK. An invited audience of more than 300 guests is expected to attend the lecture.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor said: "I am convinced that religious communities have a significant role to play in British society, but to play that role religions need to be open and honest with and about each other. Dialogue between religions requires careful listening and respect for each other's identity. I hope this event is part of this important process of inter-religious dialogue and understanding that will help society as a whole."

Dr Sophie Gilliat-Ray, Director of the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK, said: "This visit highlights the Centre as a hub for dynamic thinking and debate about interfaith relations."

Saleem Kidwai, Secretary General Muslim Council of Wales, said: "This promises to be a momentous occasion bringing together two of the most prominent religious leaders of our times. This lecture encourages an on-going and important dialogue. It is only by appreciating our similarities that we can live with our differences."
