Cardiff University is to deliver a pioneering academy for one of the UK’s leading financial services companies, which will create teams of highly skilled medical underwriting professionals.
The Centre for Lifelong Learning and the School of Psychology has teamed-up with Legal and General to launch a new medical underwriting academy at Cardiff University for the company’s underwriters and claim handlers from across the UK helping them become specialists in their field
The bespoke academy will provide in-depth medical training and will be taught through a mix of on-campus and on-line learning, visits to clinics and hospitals, discussion groups, and lectures.
Its launch follows the successful Medical Foundations for Underwriting course, the result of an earlier collaboration between Cardiff University and Legal and General.
Professor Mansel Aylward, lead academic for the course comments ‘We’ve run a number of courses for Legal and General and it is very satisfying to see the success of these lead to the specialist medical underwriting modules.
"The partnership is a great example of the flexibility that Cardiff University can offer business in design and delivery of bespoke continuing professional development.’
Russell Whitworth, Legal and General’s claims and underwriting director says: "The course and collaboration with Cardiff University will allow senior underwriters and claims assessors to specialise in a particular medical field, which means we can build a team of experts It’s vital that an insurance company as large as we are demonstrates best practice and we intend to have the best underwriting team in Europe."
Cardiff University will deliver a total of eight modules over the course of five weeks including cardiology, oncology, neurology, mental health, endocrinology (principally diabetes and thyroid disorders), gastroenterology, renal and urogenital disorders, and incapacity (diseases of the joints and biopsychsocial influences on disability).
