Students from the University’s Cardiff International Academy of Voice will join operatic stars in a sell-out concert to honour Welsh tenor Dennis O’Neill, CBE.
The Royal Gala Concert 'Dennis O’Neill - A Career Tribute' will be held at the Wales Millennium Centre on Sunday 25 November and broadcast on S4C during the Christmas period.
Led by international opera star Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, the concert will celebrate the life and work of internationally renowned Welsh tenor Dennis O’Neill, Director of the Academy at the University, with a public audience and invited guests, including HRH The Duchess of Gloucester.
Joining Dame Kiri for the event will be students from the Academy and a host of world-famous opera stars such as Shan Cothi and Wynne Evans, with a special performance by Dennis O’Neill himself.
Tenor Gergely Nemeti is one of the students from the Academy singing at the concert: "It's a huge honour to sing in a concert for your mentor especially when it's a tribute to his whole career. I'm also looking forward to performing at the Wales Millennium Centre and will carry fond memories of Cardiff with me when I leave at the end of the year."
The Academy provides specialist training for exceptional opera singers from around the world under the guidance of Dennis O’Neill. Through a series of master-classes and workshops given by established names in the operatic world, the students are able to perfect their vocal techniques and fulfil their world performance potential. The next master-class, given by Dr Jonathan Miller on 7 December will help the Academy’s singers to develop their operatic ensembles.
Throughout November the Academy students have given a series of public performances which culminate on 30 November in an Operatic Gala. Tickets for the event, which is held at the University Concert Hall on Corbett Road, CF10 3EB can be bought for £9 (concessions £7) on 029 2048 1853.
The Royal Gala on Sunday 25 November is being hosted by St Johns Ambulance in conjunction with the Wales Millennium Centre.
