The first programme has just completed for lecturers and senior lecturers recently appointed as principal investigators or currently leading small research teams.
Cardiff is the first university in the UK to incorporate the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education’s ‘Research Team Leadership’ module into its own programme. This includes additional training activities and sustained support for participants. The aims are to improve the quality of leadership of research teams and to give those research staff new to the leadership role an opportunity to develop their team leading skills.
The programme focused on practical techniques for leading and managing research teams. It consisted of an induction morning with senior managers and researchers, a two day module on research team leadership techniques facilitated by the Leadership Foundation and a final one-day module presented by Cardiff staff.
Senior research staff gave presentations to put research team leadership in Cardiff into context. They also undertook individual mentoring sessions for participants. Specialist staff from all the key support services in the institution contributed to discussions during the second module on applying the learning in Cardiff University.
All participants had access to additional online support materials in Blackboard and were able to complete self-assessment questionnaires as well as get leadership and management development guidance based on their individual profiles.
The next programme of the ‘Leadership & Management Support Programme for Research Team Leaders’ starts on 1 February 2008. It has already been publicised in the Staff Development Programme booklet. The closing date for applications is 11 January 2008.
