A unique experiment between the University and communication company Nokia has led to two journalism students winning an all expenses paid trip to South Africa.
Chris Cousens and Andy Sloan, who are students on the Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism Studies, were among the 85 trainee journalists invited to take part in the competition to cover Cardiff from a new and unseen angle.
The competition was part of a link between the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies’ professional journalism diplomas and Nokia, which has seen students exploring cutting-edge mobile journalism with the N95 mobile devices donated by the company.
The pair, who are both keen surfers decided to wrap the N95 in a freezer bag and film their adventures surfing along the River Taff in search of an imaginary surf spot, Cardiff Reef. Their video won them a four day break to Cape Town in South Africa to report on another of Nokia’s Trend Lab’s.
Andy said: "We were absolutely delighted to win The Cardiff Experiment. Our film was great fun and a little bit out of the ordinary so I think that’s what sealed it for us. We got a different perspective on Cardiff thanks to the size of the phones and by taking a bit of a risk with them."
The Nokia Trends Lab is a series of experiments designed to explore the capabilities of the latest mobile devices in the areas of film, music, photography and design. The School will continue working with the N95's as part of the postgraduate diplomas.
Glyn Mottershead, Professional Tutor in Newspaper Journalism at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies said: "Cardiff is the only UK University undertaking this research for Nokia and it puts the School and our students at the forefront of cutting edge research and developments in modern journalism. We’re all very excited to see exactly what the N95 can do in terms of providing a full multi-media platform for journalists."
