A successful collaboration between the University and Coed Cymru which is helping to produce low carbon affordable housing using homegrown Welsh softwood has been recognised at the University’s annual Innovation Awards.
The project – Ty Unnos – ‘A house in one night’ – saw the University’s Welsh School of Architecture and Coed Cymru work in partnership to help produce low carbon, affordable housing using homegrown Welsh softwood which could offer house builders an alternative to imported timber for sustainable housing.
As well as meeting all the project aims, the technical performance required for domestic housing has been surpassed enabling the team to look at handling larger spans in buildings, which could include buildings such as schools.
Dr Wayne Forster, Welsh School of Architecture, said: "This award builds on the work that the School has been doing to establish the feasibility of producing low cost, social housing using homegrown softwood.
"This specific project has helped us to re-engineer a home grown material with poor performance capabilities, low in value, readily available and locally sourced into a high value integrated system which could potentially lead to the production of locally sourced sustainable housing to help plug Wales’ housing gap."
Further funding has been secured, allowing the team to continue applied research with the aim of developing the system for mass market production.
Director of Coed Cymru, David Jenkins said: "This has been a real team effort. To move from the original challenge set by Countryside Council for Wales two years ago to where we are today is testament to the strength of the original idea and the vision of our supporters, suppliers and manufacturers who are now bringing this product to market."
The Cardiff University Innovation Awards, now in their ninth year, are an opportunity to celebrate the links and successful collaborations forged between the University and industry.
The 2009 awards were sponsored by Geldards LLP, Fusion IP and Finance Wales.
