Performance and composition

We are extremely proud of the wide variety of performance and composition opportunities we offer at the School of Music.

Performance

Male singer performing

We offer a rich and diverse range of musical activities, including School-led music groups, weekly student-run lunchtime concerts, as well as many student-led musical societies and groups including choral groups, Big Band, and an Operatic Society.

Our ensembles regularly perform in Cardiff’s leading venues, as well as further afield. Our ensembles have previously undertaken tours throughout Europe, China and Indonesia.

Our School offers a 250-seat Concert Hall housing two concert grand pianos, a two-manual pipe organ, a chamber organ, a fortepiano, two harpsichords and various other early keyboard instruments, as well as percussion instruments.

Our composition department is active, teaching at undergraduate, Masters and PhD level. We offer a wide range of composition opportunities including modules throughout undergraduate and Masters as well as regular visits from guest composers, professional performers, and ensembles.

Our Music Building is home to four electro-acoustic studios, fully acoustically treated and equipped to industry standards including ProTools, Logic Pro, and numerous software instruments, sample banks and plugins. Our main studio also has an attached live room for multi-track recording, voiceovers, and overdubs.
