Cardiff University Brass Band travelled to Lancaster University recently to compete in the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The Band came fourth in the overall competition and Martin Humphries was named Best Student Conductor.
Speaking before the competition, Martin Humphries, the Brass Band's Music Director and MMus Composition student, said: “Our programme this year is titled ‘Postcards from Wales’ and sees us perform five pieces which take traditional Welsh ideas or musical themes (such as hymn tunes or folk songs) and set them in new and original ways.
“One item is by current Cardiff University PHD student Matthew Hall, whilst another is by recent MMus alumnus Tom Davoren. We will also feature second year undergraduate Jack Lewis in an incredibly challenging and virtuosic trombone solo.
“We are very proud of Wales and of Cardiff University and I hope our programme choices demonstrate this. We are very much looking forward to representing the university on a national stage.”
In preparation for UniBrass, the Brass Band performed their programme in the School’s Concert Hall at 6pm on Friday 15 February.
The competition on Saturday 16 February was streamed live online at www.unibrass.co.uk.
