Sharing expertise on Ludwig van
Professors David Wyn Jones and Kenneth Hamilton are part of the line-up for one of the largest Beethoven festivals the UK has seen in many years.
Ludwig van, organised by the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), is a celebration of the music and legacy of Beethoven.
A study session with Professor Jones, entitled The Eroica Symphony: setting the agenda and forgetting history, will take place on Friday 1 February. Professor Jones will be looking at the early performance history of the Eroica symphony and another, forgotten symphony in E flat major by one of Beethoven’s contemporaries, Anton Eberl.
Beethoven on the piano: Arrangements and Derangements, a study session with Professor Hamilton takes place on Friday 17 May. Professor Hamilton will be playing and discussing piano transcriptions of Beethoven’s seventh symphony, from Liszt’s virtuoso arrangement to Kalkbrenner’s often ridiculed ‘derangement’.
